The Commonwealth of Massachusetts William Francis Galvin, Secretary of the Commonwealth Public Records Division Manza Arthur Supervisor of Records August 16, 2023 SPR23/1782 Major Susan Schofield Supervisor of Communications Dukes County Sheriff’s Office 9 Flight Path Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 Dear Major Schofield: I have received the petition of John Hilliard, of the Boston Globe, appealing the response of the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office (Office) to a request for public records. See G. L. c. 66, § 10A; see also 950 C.M.R. 32.08(1). On July 25, 2023, Mr. Hilliard requested the following records: [1.] Any requests for police service at Edgartown Great Pond from about 7p.m. on Sunday, July 23, through Monday, July 24[;] [2.] Any reports, recordings of emergency calls or transmissions related to requests for service at Edgartown Great Pond during that period[.] The Office responded on August 1, 2023. Unsatisfied with the Office’s response, Mr. Hilliard petitioned this office and this appeal, SPR23/1782, was opened as a result. Subsequently, I learned that the Office intends to provide a further response to Mr. Hilliard. Accordingly, the Office is ordered to provide Mr. Hilliard with said response, provided in a manner consistent with this order, the Public Records Law and its Regulations within ten (10) business days. A copy of any such response must be provided to this office. It is preferable to send an electronic copy of this response to this office at pre@sec.state.ma.us. Mr. Hilliard may appeal the substantive nature of the Office’s response within ninety (90) days. See 950 C.M.R. 32.08(1).
