See G. L. c. 66, § 10A; see also 950 C.M.R. 32.08(1). On August 15, 2024, Ms. Grossman requested: [T]he total additional financial cost to the state police (anything beyond regularly- scheduled shifts for the time frames included) for the response to the student protest and subsequent arrests at UMass Amherst on May 7 and 8 as well as number of troopers responding, additional cost to operate the SERT unit, number of cruisers, cost of the helicopter, etc. If these costs were actually paid by UMass or another agency, kindly let me know that as well. I understand that some numbers will be estimates, such as the average cost to run a police cruiser for so many hours, or the average cost to operate the helicopter for a specific time and distance. If state police had follow-up responsibilities for paperwork, court appearances, etc., please include that as well. Please also break down number of respondents who were actively working at these times and number on overtime. Claiming to not yet have received responsive records, Ms. Grossman petitioned this office and this appeal, SPR24/2522, was opened as a result. Despite being notified of the opening of this appeal, it remains unclear whether the Department has provided a response. Accordingly, the Department is ordered to provide Ms. Grossman with a response to her request, provided in a manner consistent with this order, the Public Records Law and its Regulations within ten (10) business days. A copy of any such response must be provided to this office. It is preferable to send an electronic copy of the response to this office at pre@sec.state.ma.us. Ms. Grossman may appeal the substantive nature of the Department’s response within ninety (90) days. See 950 C.M.R. 32.08(1).
