Records Access Officer University of Massachusetts President’s Office One Beacon Street, 31st Floor Boston, MA 02108 Dear Attorney Flaherty: I have received the petition of Kevin Young appealing the response of the University of Massachusetts President’s Office (Office) to a request for public records. See G. L. c. 66, § 10A; see also 950 C.M.R. 32.08(1). On March 6, 2025, Mr. Young requested the following: [1] [A]ny requests, inquiries, instructions, or specifications provided by UMass leadership to the Prince Lobel law firm between May 7, 2024, and June 30, 2024, regarding plans for an investigation into the events of May 7, 2024, on the UMass Amherst campus[;] [2] [A]ny contracts, invoices, bills, and/or receipts exchanged between UMass and the Prince Lobel law firm between May 7, 2024 and March 6, 2025, pertaining to Prince Lobel’s investigation of the events of May 7, 2024, on the UMass Amherst campus[;] [3] [A]ny results of the investigation delivered by Prince Lobel to UMass between May 7, 2024, and March 6, 2025. The Office responded on March 20, 2025. Unsatisfied with the Office’s response, Mr. Young petitioned this office and this appeal, SPR25/0911, was opened as a result. Subsequent to the opening of this appeal, I learned that the Office intends to provide a supplemental response to Mr. Young. Accordingly, said response must be provided in a manner consistent with the Public Records Law and its Regulations within ten (10) business days. A copy of any such response must be provided to this office. It is preferable to send an electronic copy of the response to this office at pre@sec.state.ma.us.
